Judo President of the federation heads Russian national team

On the Russian judo championship which ended in Novocheboksarsk on Sunday some organizational problems were solved connected with the directing national team, SE-Internet corespondent Boris TITOV reports.

As the chief coach replacing Valery Vostrikov who resigned in October 40-year old Judo Federation president Vladimir Shestakov was appointed - sports master, second prize winner on the Olympic Games-88, Goodwill games champion-86, European champion-85. It is with his appointment to the federation administration in November, 1999, that specialists link the success of Russian judoists on the international championships of the recent two years - European championship-2000 and 2001, Olympic games in Sydney-2000, Munich World championship-2001.

As the assistant of RJF president was appointed 51-year old vice-president of the federation Vladimir Kaplin, who until 1997 was working as the chief coach of national team. In the Olympic years 1992 and 1996 he contributed to the success of the CIS team in Barselona (two golden medals) and failure of Russian judoists in Atlanta (no medals).

The chairman of the judges committee of RJF is 45-year old international referee Sergey Kabanov, candidate of sciences and Tumen vice-mayor.

It was also stated on the conference that starting from now country's championships will be held in summer against the present practice in autumn. The next championship will be held from June, 27 to 30, 2002 in Krasnoyarsk.

The selection for the Russian championships will from now on be held not in zone tournaments, but in federal districts championships. The situation is hardest in Privolzhsky district which covers 18 territories. To compare: Ural district covers only 6 territories.
